Tonight, Tails presents double-header musical entertainment, first with Kyng Bea on piano at 7:30, followed at 10 pm by a preview performance of the Tony-winning Broadway musical “Sunset Boulevard" by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Members of the Opera House Theatre cast of the upcoming Wilmington production directed by Ray Kennedy will sing numbers from the show you WILL want to see, opening August 1 at Thalian Hall.
Based on the 1950 Billy Wilder-directed movie of the same name, “Sunset Boulevard” is the story of Norma Desmond, the "greatest star of all" who ruled the silent film era but didn't make the transition to "talkies," and her quest to become relevant again. She lives in a decaying mansion on the storied street of the title, along with her devoted butler (and first husband) Max. A young screenwriter agrees to tailor a screenplay for Norma's comeback ("it's not a comeback, it's a RETURN!") while taking up residence in the mansion. Romance and tragedy ensue. Famous lines are uttered ("And now Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my closeup.")
The Andrew Lloyd Webber musical starred Glenn Close, who won the Tony, in the 1995 American premiere, and Patti Lupone, Betty Buckley, and Elaine Page, all of whom were nominated for London's Olivier award, in the 1993-95 London productions.
Tails will run the original black-and-white Hollywood movie starring Gloria Swanson and William Holden on a loop on their big-screen TV as backdrop for the evening. It's going to be a great big Broadway night at Tails, and one you don't want to miss!
